The Management Team

  Kevin O'Brien

President

From snowboard to boardroom, Kevin navigates his way with enthusiasm and focus. Kevin joined IMV Projects in 2001 and has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to our mission to be Canada's go-to project execution provider for the energy industry. Kevin succeeds our founder, Ivan Velev, P.Eng., who continues to serve the company as Chairman of the Board. Kevin is responsible and accountable for all corporate decisions.

Kevin has contributed to the success and growth of IMV Projects by providing leadership, promoting a feeling of community, and taking on initiatives that promote more efficiency in project execution for our clients. His previous roles include: Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Vice President of Subsidiaries and Affiliates, Manager - Civil/Structural Engineering and Design and Project Manager.

For recreation, if there is snow, Kevin is on it, as an avid snowboarder. In fair weather, you'll find him working his handicap on the links. Kevin is married to Joanna, and together they enjoy travelling and many outdoor sports, and they love to get away to their second home in Fernie, B.C.

Kevin is originally from Montreal, Quebec, and holds a Bachelor of Applied Science degree (Civil Engineering) from Queen's University. Professional memberships include the Canadian Heavy Oil Association (CHOA), the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGA) and The Canadian Oilmen’s Executive Association.

  Deb Kowbel

Senior Vice President & COO

As Senior Vice President of Operations and Chief Operating Officer, Deb is responsible for all aspects of project execution. Deb has been a Senior Project Manager at IMV Projects since 2005, and was Director of Projects before moving into her role as Senior Vice President and COO.

Deb’s experience includes over 20 years of engineering experience and ten years in project and discipline management, in addition to eleven years in process design of new thermal heavy oil facilities, gas processing facilities, and debottlenecking projects. In her role as Vice President and COO, Deb oversees Project Delivery, Project Management, Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Assurance, as well as Engineering and Design.

When not in the office, Deb spends her time exploring the four corners of the globe or perfecting her swing on the golf course.

Deb holds a Bachelor of Science (Chemical Engineering) from the University of Saskatchewan and is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).

  Hans Verwijs

Vice President Project Management

As Vice President of Projects Management, Hans is responsible for all project managers, procurement and project controls. In addition to the day-to-day objectives associated with overseeing his departments, Hans oversees the standardization of project execution documents and reports and the refinement of project execution processes.

Hans has over 25 years in various industries, such as electronics manufacturing, defense-sector system engineering, high-tech project management and oil and gas. Previous experience at IMV Projects includes scheduling and cost estimating, project engineering, project management and his most recent role as Manager of Projects.

A lifelong learner, Hans enjoys being both student and teacher. Hans has earned various diplomas and certificates from the University of Calgary and SAIT, and teaches Project Management courses at SAIT part-time.Hans holds a Bachelor of Applied Science degree (Mechanical Engineering) from the University of Waterloo and a Masters of Applied Science (Metallurgical Engineering) from Dalhousie University, and is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists, and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA), and is a registered Project Management Professional (PMP).

  Brent O'Dell

Vice President Engineering and Design

Brent O’Dell is Vice President of Engineering and Design, responsible for all Engineering and Design departments: Process, Mechanical, Civil/Structural, Electrical, Instrumentation, Controls, Piping, Pipeline and Engineering Application Services.

Since joining IMV Projects in 2005, Brent has worked as an Engineer and as a Project Manager with our Joint Venture company. He has over 25 years of experience in the oil and gas industry and has led a number of engineering teams for sour gas, heavy-oil, and thermal recovery facilities, offshore production platforms, and control and safety systems.

When not at work, Brent enjoys fishing, golfing, kayaking, and spending time at his cabin in British Columbia.

Brent holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemical and Petroleum Engineering from the University of Calgary and is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA), the Association of Professional Engineers and Geologists of British Columbia (APEGBC), and the International Society of Automation (ISA).

  Kurt Kennedy

Vice President Corporate Services

With over 25 years in the oil and gas industry, Kurt brings a depth of experience to his position as Vice President of Corporate Services. The Corporate Services group includes Human Resources, Legal Affairs and Risk Management, Office Facilities and Administration, Business Solutions and Services, IT, and Corporate Communications. The group provides support services and infrastructure to all areas of IMV Projects' business and interfaces regularly with our Wood Group affiliates around the globe.

Before joining IMV Projects in 2003, Kurt spent over 12 years in upstream production with BP and Amoco as a project engineer and project manager for heavy oil and natural gas facilities projects, as well as arctic/frontier offshore drilling and production. At IMV Projects, he has had the opportunity to work in a wide range of areas, from cost estimating on large heavy oil capital projects, to arctic engineering on Beaufort Sea offshore development studies, to business development in the Calgary market, the USA, Kazakhstan and Russia. Industry experience has also developed his strong understanding of the upstream oil and gas value chain, including stage-gated project management systems, cost estimating, scheduling, risk analysis and Joint Venture (JV) issues.

Kurt holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree (Civil Engineering) and a Master of Science degree (Ocean Engineering) from Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John's, and has memberships to the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA), and the Canadian Heavy Oil Association (CHOA). He is also an active member of the advisory committee for the Calgary YMCA Strong Kids campaign.

  Dean Milner

Vice President Business Development

Dean joined IMV Projects in 2002, bringing 30 years of experience in the oil and gas industry with proven success in the areas of business management, marketing, business development, new product development, sales, and the management of large sales forces.

As Vice President of Business Development, Dean looks after new client development, manages the sales section of the Business Development team, and assumes the client Relationship Manager role for most of our clients.

Dean has been involved with all of IMV Projects' clients at various times in their growth cycle. Current activities focus on the client Relationship Management role whereby client objectives are paramount to the ongoing success of both organizations.

He has been a past President and/or Executive Board Member of the Canadian Gas Processors Suppliers Association, the Gas Processors Association Canada, and the Canadian Heavy Oil Association.

In his spare time Dean enjoys golfing, snooker, and taking his best buddy Thor to table tennis events.

  Tom Fransham

Vice President HSEQ

Tom joined IMV Projects in 2006 as the Director of Project Services. Leading his team to develop systems that help ensure consistent and predictable project outcomes, Tom put processes in place which allow teams to continually improve project execution by building on the experience of previous projects.

Tom is trading in his two previous titles as Vice President of Engineering and Design and Vice President of Quality Assurance to become IMV’s first Vice President Health Safety Environment Quality. As an IMV Projects veteran, Tom has considerable experience and is committed to technical safety engineering and occupational safety. An area of particular focus is the Safety Leadership Program, a Wood Group organization-wide intensive training initiative that reinforces safety leadership with a focus on process safety and integrity management.

When the company hats are off, Tom enjoys outdoor athletics and delights in his role as a dad. Whether it is hiking through the mountains with his family, or riding new trails on his mountain bike, Tom makes time to get outside and appreciate Alberta’s unique terrain. He also enjoys jogging or biking to work, particularly during gridlock.

Tom holds a Bachelor of Applied Science degree (Mechanical Engineering) from the University of Waterloo and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Calgary. His professional memberships include: the Wood Group Engineering Excellence Program Team, APEGA, APEGS, and APEGM.

  Gunter Lehnert-Thiel

Vice President Project Delivery

As Vice President of Project Delivery, Gunter is responsible for all aspects of project delivery and expanding our business streams of Thermal Heavy Oil, Natural Gas, Pipelines, Heavy Civil and Construction Management.

Gunter has more than 20 years of industry experience with exploration and production companies and EPCM companies, including onsite construction experience, over 10 years of project management experience, and five years as a senior project manager for IMV Projects on the Shell Orion project. Other significant projects include the completion of thermal heavy oil facility projects for Amoco, CNRL, Husky and Suncor.

Truly a man of the outdoors, Gunter enjoys hobby farming, woodworking, timber frame construction, hunting, and vegetable gardening.

Gunter holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Lakehead University Thunder Bay, Ontario and a Mechanical Engineering Technology Diploma from SIAST Kelsey Campus Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists, and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).

  Ken Davis

Vice President Business Affiliates

Ken Davis joined IMV Projects in 2001 as a Project Manager, bringing "results-oriented" project management. Ken’s experience includes 20 years in various oil and gas sectors and the successful management of a diverse portfolio of large-capital projects.

As Vice President of Business Affiliates, Ken is responsible for managing all of IMV Projects' corporate collaborations. He is the point-person for communication, alignment, and cooperation between IMV Projects and Wood Group companies and is responsible for the implementation and management of our WorkShare program.

Ken's experience includes an extensive focus on thermal-heavy-oil projects, as well as plant expansion design and construction. Ken is an integral part of IMV Project’s continual growth and expansion, creating new relationships and connections.

Outside of the office, Ken enjoys spending time outdoors and in the winter, his preferred location is the ski resort.

Ken holds a Bachelor of Science degree (Mechanical Engineering) from Lakehead University, and is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA), and the Canadian Heavy Oil Association (CHOA).
